Sven Toorvald

Sven is a California native whose early ballet training started in Los Angeles with the Royal Ballet’s Stanley Holden and Margaret Hills. He continued his studies in New York City at the Joffrey Ballet and American Ballet Theatre culminating in his being hired by Houston Ballet Company under Ben Stevenson.

While in Houston, Sven performed the entire repertory including the classics Swan Lake, Sleeping Beauty, Cinderella, Nutcracker and Balanchine’s Serenade and Theme and Variations.

Sven has also performed as a soloist with Hubbard Street Dance Company in Chicago under Lou Conte, with Tulsa Ballet Theatre under Moscelyne Larkin and with Valentina Kosolova’s Daring Project with choreographer Margo Sappington.

Sven is a graduate of the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London, New York’s famed Neighborhood Playhouse with Sanford Meisner and the American Film Institute in Los Angeles. Sven also wrote and directed the documentary, The Ballerina Interviews, which premiered on PBS.

As a teacher, Sven has taught at New York University, UCLA, California Institute of the Arts, Santa Monica College, the Edge’s LA Dancer Force touring conventions, Houston Met Dance Center, Pasadena Dance Theatre, and California Dance Theatre in Agoura Hills.
